Background of the Study
Petroleum exploration and refining activities are known to release various pollutants that can have adverse effects on human health. In Bonny, residents are exposed to pollutants such as hydrocarbons and heavy metals, which may contribute to a range of physical health issues (Obi, 2023). This study investigates the impact of petroleum pollutants on physical health by examining exposure levels and correlating them with clinical health outcomes. The research employs environmental sampling, health surveys, and clinical examinations to assess respiratory, dermatological, and systemic health parameters (Amadi, 2024). The study also explores the cumulative effects of long-term exposure and considers factors such as proximity to industrial sites and individual susceptibility (Chukwu, 2025). By integrating environmental science with public health research, the study aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of how petroleum pollutants affect the physical well-being of Bonny residents. This evidence-based approach is expected to inform regulatory policies and health interventions aimed at reducing pollutant exposure and mitigating its effects on community health.

Statement of the Problem
There is an urgent need to address the health impacts of petroleum pollutants in Bonny, yet current research on this topic remains limited. Exposure to toxic substances from petroleum activities is suspected to be linked to various physical health issues, but empirical data are scarce (Okoro, 2023). This lack of localized research prevents the development of effective health and environmental policies to protect the community (Nwosu, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To measure levels of petroleum pollutants in Bonny.

  2. To evaluate the physical health outcomes associated with pollutant exposure.

  3. To recommend strategies for reducing exposure and mitigating health risks.

Research Questions:

  1. What are the levels of petroleum pollutants in Bonny?

  2. How do these pollutants affect physical health?

  3. What measures can reduce exposure to these harmful substances?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Higher levels of petroleum pollutants are associated with adverse physical health outcomes.

  2. Proximity to industrial sites increases the risk of pollutant-related health issues.

  3. Implementing environmental regulations can reduce health risks.

Significance of the Study
This study will provide critical data on the health effects of petroleum pollutants, informing environmental and public health policies in Bonny. The findings will help safeguard community health through targeted interventions and improved regulatory measures (Uzo, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to investigating the impact of exposure to petroleum pollutants on physical health in Bonny Local Government Area only.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Petroleum Pollutants: Harmful substances released during petroleum extraction and processing.

  • Exposure: Contact with chemical substances that may affect health.

  • Physical Health: The condition of the body, including the proper functioning of organs and systems.
